St Coelan's Holy Well

We had just returned from paying a visit to Inishcaltra (Holy Island) on Lough Derg so we decided to visit other sites in the locality connected with the island. St Coelan, 690 -750, was associated with Inishcaltra after the death of St Caimin. This ancient well, on the south side of the road between Tuamgraney and Bodyke, was dedicated to him. The well was a place of pilgrimage on the saint's feast day, 29th July, up until recent times. According to an inscribed plaque above the well house it was built over the well in September 1803

Situated: Very easy, from Tuamgraney head southwest on the R352 for 1.4 kilometres the well house is on your left hand side.
